THE BLOUNT COUNTY JAIL OPENED ITS DOORS THURSDAY TO TWO DOZEN INMATES FROM A DIFFERENT JAIL, MORE THAN TWO HOURS AWAY. WE EXPRESSED TO THEM THAT, HEY, WELCOME TO BLOUNT COUNTY. UH, WE’RE GOING TO TAKE CARE OF YOU. YESTERDAY, AUTAUGA COUNTY SHERIFF ANNOUNCED HE WAS EVACUATING HIS JAIL FOR HEALTH AND SAFETY REASONS. IT’S MY DUTY AND RESPONSIBILITY AS SHERIFF BASED OFF OF STATE LAW AND CONSTITUTIONAL LAW TO TO, UH, TAKE CARE OF THE INCARCERATE PEOPLE AT MY JAIL. WHEN THE SHERIFF HAS TO MAKE THIS KIND OF DECISION AND MAKE THIS KIND OF CALL. UH, IT’S NOT ONE THAT’S EASY. MULTIPLE AREA SHERIFFS ANSWERED THE CALL FOR HELP. SHELBY COUNTY OFFERED TO TAKE IN UP TO 15 INMATES. BLOUNT COUNTY SHERIFF MARK MOON SAYS THEY WERE SENT TO DOZEN HALF MEN, HALF WOMEN. HE’S NOT SURE HOW LONG THEY’LL STAY. IT COULD BE WEEKS. IT COULD BE MONTHS. IT COULD BE A YEAR. BUT I DON’T KNOW NOBODY KNOWS RIGHT NOW. ONLY BECAUSE OF SOME THINGS THAT THEY HAVE TO DO TO TO CORRECT SOME ISSUES. THERE. Blount County accepts 24 inmates from evacuated Autauga County Jail
The Blount County Jail opened its doors Thursday to two dozen inmates from a different jail more than two hours away.“We expressed to them that I welcome them to Blount County. We're going to take care of you,” Blount County Sheriff Mark Moon said.This week, Autauga County's sheriff announced he was evacuating his jail for health and safety reasons.“It's my duty and responsibility of sheriff based off of state law and constitutional law to take care of the incarcerated people at my jail,” Autauga County Sheriff Mark Harrell said.“When the sheriff has to make this kind of decision, this kind of call, it's not one that's easy,” Moon said.Multiple area sheriffs answered the call for help.Shelby County offered to take in up to 15 inmates.Moon says they were sent two dozen after offering room for 45. He's not sure how long they'll stay.“It could be weeks, could be months, could be a year. But I don't know. Nobody knows right now, only because of some things that they have to do to correct some issues there,” Moon said.However, no matter how long it takes, he says pitching in when another sheriff is need is a no-brainer.“Deputy's on patrol some because, number one, they're going to respond to someone's time of need.
