THE BLOUNT COUNTY JAIL OPENED ITS DOORS THURSDAY TO TWO DOZEN INMATES FROM A DIFFERENT JAIL, MORE THAN TWO HOURS AWAY. WE EXPRESSED TO THEM THAT, HEY, WELCOME TO BLOUNT COUNTY. UH, WE’RE GOING TO TAKE CARE OF YOU. YESTERDAY, AUTAUGA COUNTY SHERIFF ANNOUNCED HE WAS EVACUATING HIS JAIL FOR HEALTH AND SAFETY REASONS. IT’S MY DUTY AND RESPONSIBILITY AS SHERIFF BASED OFF OF STATE LAW AND CONSTITUTIONAL LAW TO TO, UH, TAKE CARE OF THE INCARCERATE PEOPLE AT MY JAIL. WHEN THE SHERIFF HAS TO MAKE THIS KIND OF DECISION AND MAKE THIS KIND OF CALL. UH, IT’S NOT ONE THAT’S EASY. MULTIPLE AREA SHERIFFS ANSWERED THE CALL FOR HELP. SHELBY COUNTY OFFERED TO TAKE IN UP TO 15 INMATES. BLOUNT COUNTY SHERIFF MARK MOON SAYS THEY WERE SENT TO DOZEN HALF MEN, HALF WOMEN. HE’S NOT SURE HOW LONG THEY’LL STAY. IT COULD BE WEEKS. IT COULD BE MONTHS. IT COULD BE A YEAR. BUT I DON’T KNOW NOBODY KNOWS RIGHT NOW. ONLY BECAUSE OF SOME THINGS THAT THEY HAVE TO DO TO TO CORRECT SOME ISSUES. THERE. BUT NO MATTER HOW LONG IT TAKES, HE SAYS PITCHING IN WHEN ANOTHER SHERIFF IS IN NEED IS A NO BRAINER. DEPUTIES ON PATROL, SOMEBODY CALLS 911, THEY’RE GOING TO RESPOND TO SOMEBODY’S TIME OF NEED AND A SHERIFF CALLED IN HIS TIME OF NEED, AND WE’RE RESPONDING TO HELP THOSE SHERIFF MOON SAYS THAT AUTAUGA COUNTY WILL PAY FOR THE TRANSPORT INMATES MEDICAL AND FOOD EXPENSES
